Magnet Program for Integrated Arts and Technology
The mission of our magnet team is to provide a program that stimulates individual interests, especially in the arts and technology, and develops individual abilities in academic, creative, technological, and/or other talent areas. At EKD, magnet students will experience an instructional day infused with the arts and technology. They participate in regular integrated lessons with Encore and classroom teachers during which they learn curricular content through the lens of art, music, theater, physical education, or with the aid of technology. Additionally, EKD is currently an Apple Distinguished School with several Apple Certified teachers. Students regularly use iPads and other technology to complete projects requiring problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, innovation, and communication. Magnet students have opportunities to choose the tools and formats best suited to their learning styles when demonstrating understanding; for example, they often use Apple applications like iMovie, Keynote, Pages, and GarageBand, as well as the Google Suite. EKD teachers and students have earned state and regional recognition not only in the visual and performing arts, but also for their service to the community. Magnet students organize and execute an annual Art Gala which raises money for a local charity or non-profit. Students are expected to complete a summer project, which “frontloads” content and allows magnet teachers to increase the depth of unit exploration throughout the school year.
