Grade Level 6
GRADE 6 MATHEMATICS
306 Grade Level 6
Students will focus on the major work of Grade 6, including ratio concepts and proportional relationships, fluency with fraction and decimal operations, estimation strategies to assess reasonableness, and developing understanding of algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities. Additional topics include geometric reasoning and measurement (area, surface area) and reasoning with data, statistics and probability (histograms, box plots, measures of center and variability, likelihood of outcomes in data based on probabilities).
Students will build skills to model and solve real-world problems, make sense of quantities and their relationships, use tools and representations, and reason mathematically.
Students will take the Grade 6 Mathematics MCAP assessment during this course.
GRADE 6 ACCELERATED & ENRICHED MATHEMATICS (Merit/Pre-AP Pathway/Magnet)
316 Grade Level 6
Grade 6 Accelerated & Enriched Mathematics is a rigorous course of study aligned with all of the Grade 6 math standards and strategically aligned Grade 7 math standards. Students will focus on the major work of Grade 6, including ratio concepts and proportional relationships, fluency with fraction and decimal operations, estimation strategies to assess reasonableness, and developing understanding of algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities, while also extending into aligned Grade 7 topics.
Grade Level 7
GRADE 7 MATHEMATICS
307 Grade Level 7
Students will focus on the major work of Grade 7, including fluency with positive and negative rational number operations, estimation strategies to assess reasonableness, unit rates and proportional relationships, and apply efficient approaches to solve linear equations and inequalities in context. Additional topics include geometric reasoning and measurement (area and circumference of circles, surface area, and volume) and reasoning with data, statistics and probability (random samples, summarizing statistics using measures of center and variability, theoretical probability of simple events).
Students will build skills to model and solve real-world problems, make sense of quantities and their relationships, use tools and representations, and reason mathematically.
Students will take the Grade 7 Mathematics MCAP assessment during this course.
GRADE 7 ACCELERATED & ENRICHED MATHEMATICS (Merit/Pre-AP Pathway/Magnet)
317 Grade Level 7
Grade 7 Accelerated & Enriched Mathematics is a rigorous course of study aligned with some Grade 7 math standards and all of the Grade 8 standards. Students will complete their study of grade 7 math standards that were not covered in the Grade 6 Accelerated and Enriched course. Students will then focus on the major work of Grade 8 math, including representing and estimating with real numbers (rational and irrational), representing and solving systems of linear equations, and understanding linear functions across multiple representations (graphical, algebraic, numerical, and verbal). Additional topics include geometric reasoning and measurement (angle relationships, Pythagorean Theorem, triangle relationships) and reasoning with data, statistics and probability (analyze and make predictions using data, scatter plots, two-way tables, and probability of compound events).
Students will build skills to model and solve real-world problems, make sense of quantities and their relationships, use tools and representations, and reason mathematically.
Students will take the Grade 7 Mathematics MCAP assessment during this course.
Prerequisite: Outstanding performance during Grade 6 Math, or satisfactory performance during Grade 6 Accelerated and Enriched Mathematics, all determined using multiple data points.
Grade Level 8
GRADE 8 MATHEMATICS
308 Grade Level 8
Students will focus on the major work of Grade 8, including representing and estimating with real numbers (rational and irrational), representing and solving systems of linear equations, and understanding linear functions across multiple representations (graphical, algebraic, numerical, and verbal).
Students will take the Grade 8 Mathematics MCAP assessment during this course.
GRADE 8 INTEGRATED ALGEBRA I (Merit/AP Pathway/Magnet)
318 Grade Level 8 1 Integrated Algebra Mathematics High School Credit
Grade 8 Integrated Algebra is a rigorous course of study aligned with all of the high school Integrated Algebra 1 Maryland College and Career-Ready Standards. Students will be introduced to mathematical structures through patterns of change, data analysis, and geometric reasoning. The course focuses on comparing linear and exponential patterns, formalizing them into functions, and using data and statistics as a context for exploration. Geometry concepts are interwoven, particularly in the study of lines, angles, transformations, and spatial relationships among congruent figures and special shapes.
Students will take the Grade 8 Integrated Algebra 1 MCAP assessment during this course.
Prerequisite: Outstanding performance during Grade 7 Accelerated & Enriched Mathematics, determined using multiple data points.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME MATH SUBJECT GROUP COURSES
The following courses are offered only at Northern Middle School. Discover more about the IB MYP at Northern Middle School by reading the Signature Programs Descriptions section. Each of these Grades 6, 7, 8 courses are part of the Language and Literature Subject Group. The Language and Literature Subject Group is one of the 8 MYP Subjects in which MYP students must participate. These courses include the content of the foundational courses that are similarly-named on the preceding pages. Additionally, the curriculum includes the following components:
o Key Concepts and Related Concepts, such as Perspective and Models that are explored over an MYP student’s time in the Programme.
o Global Contexts, such as Globalization & Sustainability and Orientation in Time & Space.
o Approaches to Learning skills, such as Self-Management and Communication Skills.
o Statements of Inquiry, which allow the students to explore the content and skills through a conceptual lens.
