Career and Technical Education

Career & Technical Education (CTE) programs within Washington County and the State of Maryland are designed to prepare students for the global economy and workforce needs.

CTE programs are organized by career clusters, which are groupings of occupations and industries based on shared features or “core functions.” These programs focus on both academic and technical skill standards to ensure comprehensive preparation for students, equipping them for college and various career paths.

All CTE programs align with nationally- or state-recognized industry and academic standards. Students have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized credentials, including certifications and licenses, across all CTE programs. Furthermore, depending on the specific program, students may also have the chance to earn college credit. CTE programs incorporate work-based learning opportunities, including internships, as well as youth and registered apprenticeships.

CTE Facts:
  • High school students must fulfill a graduation requirement by completing one of two primary pathways: earning two foreign language credits or completing a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. WCPS offers 40 different completer program options across the system, with specific options available at individual schools. Students can apply for special permission to attend a school outside their home school in order to participate in a CTE program.
  • CTE thematic programs are provided at middle schools through the Foundations of Technology Education. Eighth-grade students will take either Foundations of Technology or Foundations of Computer Science to meet high school graduation requirements.
  • Boyd J. Michael III Technical High School provides eleventh-grade and twelfth-grade students with an opportunity to participate in 18 unique CTE programs.  Students must apply during their tenth-grade year to be accepted into a program.
  • Eleventh-grade and twelfth-grade students in CTE programs can access Youth Apprenticeship and Adult Registered Apprenticeship opportunities related to their field of study. Students must apply for available positions.
  • WCPS offers 27 Dual Enrollment CTE courses in partnership with Hagerstown Community College, spanning multiple CTE completer programs.
  • With guidance from Career Coaches and School Counselors, students will create a two-year post-high school academic/career pathway plan by graduation.
  • CTE students have the opportunity to network with local business partnerships and establish mentors.
  • WCPS proudly supports student involvement in CTE co-curricular programs, including FFA, SkillsUSA, and VEX Robotics.
