High School Curriculum

Literacy Vision: All WCPS students have the right to be successful and confident readers and writers. Instruction, grounded in systematic, explicit foundational skills and complex texts, promotes thinking and builds knowledge so students communicate their ideas in the classroom and beyond.

English courses improve literacy skills, including reading, writing, speaking, and listening. These skills are fundamental for academic success across all subjects, as well as for effective communication in daily life. When selecting English courses in high school, students should consider several factors to ensure they choose courses that align with their interests, academic goals, and future plans.

Maryland College and Career Ready Standards

  • Grades 9-12 Standards: The resources on the linked page are organized first by grade level bands and then by the Literacy Strands (Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Writing, Language, and Speaking and Listening).
