Middle School Curriculum
Literacy Vision: All WCPS students have the right to be successful and confident readers and writers. Instruction, grounded in systematic, explicit foundational skills and complex texts, promotes thinking and builds knowledge so students communicate their ideas in the classroom and beyond.
The middle school English Language Arts curriculum continues to lay a solid foundation of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills in support of the WCPS Literacy Vision. In grades 6-8, the core ELA resource is Amplify ELA, which centers around compelling texts to foster deep engagement. Each unit focuses on the strengths of the texts, engaging students in a variety of reading, writing, speaking, and listening activities. Throughout the year, students explore text structures and elements across genres, including plays, poetry, memoirs, visual documents, primary and secondary sources, and audio and video performances. Additionally, students build background knowledge and vocabulary across multiple subject areas.
