Mathematics
WCPS MATHEMATICS VISION: All WCPS students have the right to be confident and proficient mathematicians. Through evidence-based instructional practices, all students will develop deep understandings, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.
The Office of K–12 Mathematics supports the curriculum, assessment, staff, and resources for the mathematics programs in grades K–12.
The Washington County Public Schools mathematics curriculum uses the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards (MCCRS) for mathematics. The standards are grade-specific and balance mathematical understanding and procedural skills. The standards are arranged within the WCPS Essential Curriculum such that students will learn concepts in an organized fashion which allows students to make mathematical connections across grade levels while encouraging real-world problem-solving. The Standards for Mathematical Practice span all grade levels and describe how students interact and engage with mathematics. Teachers connect mathematical practices to the mathematical content in daily instruction.
The Standards for Mathematical Practice are:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
- Model with mathematics
- Use appropriate tools strategically
- Attend to precision
- Look for and make use of structure
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning
MSDE Mathematics Policy – beginning SY26-27
The PreK–12 Maryland State Department of Education’s (MSDE) Math Policy was adopted in March 2025. Elements of the policy are due to begin taking effect in the 2026-2027 school year, including revised math standards in grades PreKindergarten through grade 8.
The PreK–12 Maryland Mathematics Policy was designed to significantly improve teaching, learning, and achievement in mathematics from early childhood through secondary grades across the state of Maryland. It ensures that every student receives equitable math instruction and necessary support as they develop strong numeracy skills, fostering joyful mathematical experiences and paving the way for college and career success.
MSDE Virtual Math Policy Family Engagement Sessions
MSDE’s Mathematics Branch will host virtual
Math Policy Family Engagement Sessions throughout June 2026
These sessions will focus on Math Policy initiatives that families should expect to be implemented in the 2026-2027 school year and an overview of how they can use the Numeracy Development Framework and Family Guides to support their students.
- Thursday, June 18, 2026, 6:30–8:00 p.m.
- Saturday, June 27, 2026, 9:30–11:00 a.m.
