Advanced Programs in Elementary Schools
WCPS Elementary Magnet Programs are highly competitive programs tailored for identified gifted and talented (GATE) students. These programs offer accelerated and enriched classes, providing a stimulating environment for academically gifted learners.
Our four elementary magnet schools deliver highly challenging and fast-paced curricula on a full-time basis, catering to advanced learners in grades 2–5. Each magnet program features a specialized theme that fosters in-depth study, hands-on projects, and enriching activities, specifically designed to meet the ability levels and unique learning needs of highly gifted students.
What is GATE?
Gifted & Talented Education (GATE) services are available at all WCPS elementary schools. GATE programs are designed to meet the specific academic and social emotional needs of each student who has been identified as GATE. Measures of ability or aptitude, performance, and potential are utilized during the identification processes.
GATE programs are specialized education services that meet the needs of students who have advanced ability strengths in verbal, quantitative, or non-verbal thinking skills.
Multiple criteria are utilized during the universal screening and identification process, which include measures of ability, performance, and potential. A typical GATE student has the ability to perform well above grade level on math and/or reading skills.
In accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations for Gifted and Talented Education, all students are screened for GATE services, and a distinct identification process is followed across the district.
