Advanced Programs in Middle Schools
WCPS Middle School Magnet Programs are designed for academically advanced and creatively gifted learners, serving students who demonstrate exceptional abilities. These highly-competitive programs are located at specific middle schools throughout Washington County.
Magnet Programs
Magnet Programs are highly competitive programs for identified Gifted And Talented (GATE) students.
WCPS has five Middle School Magnet locations providing accelerated and enriched classes for academically gifted students. Each magnet school has a theme and is designed to provide challenging instruction that meets the ability levels and unique learning needs of highly gifted students. Middle Magnet students take at least two advanced-level Magnet classes. These courses vary by school. A magnet student may also have Merit classes.
Eligible students will be invited to apply in fifth grade. Participation may require transportation and enrollment in a different building.
Merit Courses
Advanced-level Merit Courses are available at every middle school and are designed to service students whose ability and/or performance indicate readiness for academic challenge.
Every grade 5 student is reviewed for inclusion in appropriate Merit Courses by the Content Specialists and the Office of Advanced Programs. Enrollment determinations are made by the middle school.
