Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

In April 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced finalized regulatory standards for PFAS compounds. PFAS are man-made chemicals that have been widely used in industry and consumer products since the 1940’s and may remain in the environment for a long time.  Research suggests exposure to high levels of PFAS may present some health risks.

All public water systems under the PFAS regulations are required to begin monitoring PFAS levels by 2027 and be in compliance by 2029.  The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) and Washington County Public Schools are already working collaboratively to comply with the EPA's new PFAS regulations.  PFAS tests were conducted in September 2024 at Fountain Rock, Greenbrier, and Old Forge elementary schools.  The results of these test can be found below:

Additional information about PFAS and your health can be found at the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
