Health Room Procedures

Parents/legal guardians are routinely notified when:

• A student has a significant illness or injury.
• A student requires dismissal from school due to illness.
• A head injury occurs, in accordance with school system procedures. 
• Emergency medical care is needed.
• A student's condition requires parent input, additional monitoring at home, or follow-up with a healthcare provider.
• Notification is otherwise required in accordance with a student's individualized health plan, emergency action plan, 504 plan, or IEP.

Our goal is to ensure every student receives safe, appropriate, and timely care while keeping parents/legal guardians informed when their involvement or awareness is necessary. Health staff carefully document all student encounters and parents/legal guardians can view this documentation via ParentVue. Parents/legal guardians are encouraged to contact their health room staff at any time if they have questions about their child's health room visit or wish to discuss their child's health care needs. 

All parent/legal guardian requests for notification by phone each time their child is evaluated in the health office must be approved annually by the school nurse based on medical necessity and clinical judgment. 

Parents/legal guardians may be asked to pick up their child if any of the following signs and symptoms are observed (not all inclusive):

• Fever greater than 100.4° F
• Vomiting more than twice in the preceding 24 hours
• Vomiting once and other signs/symptoms of illness are present
• Diarrhea that causes "accidents"
• Skin sores that are draining fluid and the area can not be reliably covered
• Respiratory virus symptoms that are worsening or not improving
• Signs and symptoms are interfering with his/her ability to learn

Students may be released to the parent/legal guardian, or a friend/relative as indicated on the Student Health/Family Information Form. Students must sign-out with the school's attendance secretary. 

Generally after an illness, students can return to school under the following conditions:

• The student has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medications. 
• Vomiting has resolved and student can hold down food/liquids.
• Diarrhea has improved.
• Respiratory virus symptoms are getting better overall for at least 24 hours.
