Medication Guidelines
- The first dose of a newly prescribed medication should be given at home.
- Medications or prescribed treatments will not be administered without a completed medication/treatment form that is signed by a licensed health care provider and the parent/legal guardian.
- Students are expected to report to the health office at he appropriate time to receive the prescribed medication. School health staff will make every reasonable effort to locate students who do not report for their medication or treatment.
- All medication and treatment orders must be formally reviewed and approved by the school's assigned registered nurse prior to administration. The registered nurse has two (2) school days to sign-off on the written prescriber's order.
- Students have the right to refuse the administration of medications and/or treatments.
- Health staff can only administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a licensed health care provider and can not take direction from parents/legal guardians regarding changes to medication dosages or administration times.
- Completed medication and treatment orders expire at one year from the date the healthcare provider signed the written order or as written by the healthcare provider on the form (whichever comes first).
- Parents/legal guardians are responsible to arrange for the pick-up of expired or discontinued medication within 5 school days unless other arrangements have been made with school health staff. Medication that is not retrieved by the parent/legal guardian will be destroyed according to policy. Medications that are not retrieved by the parent/legal guardian on the last day of school will be destroyed according to policy.
