Special Education Citizens Advisory Committee (SECAC)

SECAC works collaboratively with WCPS to:

• Share feedback and perspectives from families and the community

• Provide input on programs, services, and supports

• Promote understanding of special education within WCPS

• Strengthen communication between families, schools, and the district

Participation is open to all, and we encourage anyone interested in special education to get involved.

SECAC welcomes parents and caregivers, students and self-advocates, educators and school staff, community members, and partner organizations!

What is SECAC?

SECAC is part of a statewide network of advisory committees that partner with local school systems to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.

Through regular meetings and collaboration, SECAC:

• Serves as a voice for families and students
• Identifies areas of need and opportunity
• Shares resources and information
• Supports continuous improvement in special education services

 

SECAC GOALS

1. All students will read at or above grade level by 3rd grade and continue to read at or above grade level thereafter

2. All students will meet grade-level and course-specific curriculum standards each year and complete an established educational and/or career pathway by graduation

3. All students will be provided quality instruction using appropriate technology

4. All students will be healthy, informed and productive citizens

SECAC PURPOSE

SECAC is part of a statewide network of advisory committees required in Maryland to support and improve special education services.

SECAC works in partnership with WCPS and the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) to:

• Provide input on the needs of students with disabilities
• Support planning and coordination of services
• Help ensure students ages 3–21 have access to appropriate education and supports
