Students who are enrolling in WCPS and meet one of the following criteria are eligible for Credit Review.
The student was enrolled in home-schooling.
The student attended a school not holding a Certificate of Approval from the Maryland State Board of Education or accredited by the Middle States Association.
The student is seeking enrollment without a transcript and/or report card from any school.
The parents/guardians and the school counselor complete the Credit Review Request form within 15 calendar days of enrollment. Only those courses that are part of the current WCPS Program of Studies for High School may be reviewed for credit. The student will be tentatively scheduled based on courses taken. A schedule change may take place based on the outcome of the Credit Review.
The school counselor submits the Credit Review request and transcript to the Office of the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Reviews that occur from July 1st until the first day of the school year will be scheduled by the Office of the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
Reviews that occur after the start of the school year will be scheduled by the school. Assessments for the student to complete will be sent to the school counselor. Once the student takes the assessment, the counselor will return the unscored assessment(s) to the Office of the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.
After the assessments have been scored by the appropriate supervisor, the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction will send a letter home and a copy to the school counselor who submitted the credit review.
Credit will be awarded on a pass-fail basis, with no numerical grade. The school counselor will ensure credits are recorded on student transcripts.
A Credit Review will be conducted once for each course. A course cannot be reviewed for credit more than once.
Students who are awarded credit for Algebra 1, Biology, English 10, or Government are exempt from taking the associated MCAP state exam. Students will receive a score of 750 for Algebra I, English 10, and MISA. Students will receive a score of 448 for Government MCAP. Registrars should ensure these are entered as Course Credit Exemption in Synergy.
Once a student has attended WCPS for 15 days, the Credit Review process may not be initiated.
The Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction will hear appeals involving extenuating circumstances.
Although WCPS testing materials used for Credit Review are secure, parents or students may request to have the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction review the assessment results. The parent or student may file a written request to the Associate Superintendent for Curriculum within 10 days of the date of the notification of the outcome of the Credit Review.
