Student Devices
WCPS-Issued Chromebooks
WCPS will continue to make sure students can use Chromebooks when they are needed for learning. However, students in some grade levels may use devices less often during the school day. This change supports new Maryland law requirements and WCPS' efforts to reduce screen time and promote our students' wellbeing.
The current WCPS device deployment implementation is:
- Pre-K–Kindergarten: Students will not have a device
- Grades 1: Students will share one of the six classroom devices
- Grades 2–5: Students will share devices on a 2:1 ratio (two students to one device), and all devices will be kept at school
- Grades 6–8: Students will share devices that will be kept at school
- Grades 9–12: All students have or will receive a device to bring back-and-forth from home to school each day
NOTE: Students who have a device identified as a supplementary aid as designated in an IEP or 504 Plan will continue to have a device assigned to them.
Chromebook Care
Students who are assigned portable technology devices, including Chromebooks, must adhere to provisions outlined in the WCPS Student Device Agreement, and may be fiscally responsible for lost, stolen or damaged devices.
Device Responsibilities
Students assigned a Chromebook must follow the WCPS Student Device Agreement and Board policies. They may be financially responsible for devices that are lost, stolen, or damaged, including damage resulting from neglect.
