Title I

WCPS currently provides Title I funds to eight elementary schools:

Title I is a federal assistance program for designated schools. "Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965" was reauthorized by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) in 2015.

Federal Title I funds flow through the various state departments of education to local school districts. The amount of funds sent to each school district is based on the number of low-income families, according to federal consensus data on poverty. The local school district identifies eligible schools and provides Title I resources to those schools.

School-wide programs in WCPS are provided in the eight schools listed above where a high percentage of the children are from low-income families. Each school-wide Title I school develops methods to serve the academic needs of all students in the school. Title I Schools generally offer smaller classes, additional staffing, extra time for instruction (before or after school), a variety of teaching materials, and additional counseling and mentoring opportunities.

In addition, children with disabilities, children who are homeless, children who are neglected or delinquent, and children with limited English proficiency may be eligible to receive Title I services.
