Your Rights as a Parent/Guardian


As a parent or guardian at a Title I school, you have the right to:
 

  • Know your child’s teachers’ qualifications, including whether they are licensed or teaching outside their certification area.

  • Receive information about your child’s academic progress, including test results and classroom performance.

  • Be involved in school decision-making, including:

    • Helping develop and review the School Improvement Plan (SIP)

    • Helping develop and review the School–Family Compact

    • Giving feedback on how Title I funds are used

  • Participate in family engagement activities supported by Title I funds.

  • Request meetings with teachers, administrators, or staff to discuss your child’s learning and progress.

  • Receive communication in a language you understand, whenever possible.

  • Review and give input to the WCPS Parent Involvement Plan at any time.

  • Request information regarding professional qualifications of their child’s teacher, and of paraprofessionals who provide instructional services to their children.

NOTE: Federal law requires us to let you know when a teacher or substitute who does not have a certain set of credentials teaches your child for four or more consecutive weeks. In the event that this would occur, you would be notified in a timely manner. 

 

Your Responsibilities as a Parent/Guardian

Families play an important role in student success. You can help by:
 

  • Making sure your child attends school regularly and arrives on time

  • Encouraging learning at home (reading, homework, practice)

  • Communicating regularly with your child’s teachers

  • Participating in school meetings, events, and workshops when possible

  • Supporting positive behavior and high expectations for learning

  • Reviewing and discussing school communications with your child

Along with the linked resources, all Title I schools have a Parent and Family Engagement Plan /School-Parent Compact that foster a collaborative partnership among the school, families, and students.
